This residential development in Essex comprises two adjoining homes, featuring traditional brickwork alongside a number of distinctive architectural details, including feature gables, projecting bay windows and arched entrance surrounds.

IG Lintels supplied the project with its 100mm cavity lintel range, providing structural support across the development. In addition, special bay lintels were supplied to the living and bedroom areas to accommodate the property’s projecting bay windows.

The combination of standard and bespoke lintel solutions provided the builder with a practical approach to supporting the different openings throughout the two homes.

The Challenge

The development incorporated several architectural features that required careful consideration during construction.

In particular, the projecting bays to the living and bedroom areas required lintels that could accommodate the specific geometry of the openings while providing the required structural support.

The main entrance also featured a prominent fair-faced stone arch surround. As this formed an important part of the external appearance of the homes, it was important that the structural arrangement did not compromise the intended finish or place unintended loading onto the stone feature.

The Solution

IG’s technical team worked closely with the builder to understand the construction details and the requirements of the various openings.

The project was primarily supported using IG’s 100mm cavity lintels, with special bay lintels designed and supplied for the living and bedroom areas.

For the entrance feature, the builder confirmed that the stone arch surround was designed to be self-supporting. This allowed the structural arrangement to be considered separately from the feature stonework, helping to maintain the appearance of the entrance without unnecessarily loading the arch.

By understanding the construction before finalising the lintel requirements, IG was able to provide solutions that were appropriate to both the standard openings and the project’s more individual architectural details.
