A tell-all with Sam Hughes
On Tuesday 28th April, we had the opportunity to visit businessman, entrepreneur, influencer, and one half of The Bald Builders duo, Sam Hughes. His journey is defined by grit, resilience, and a relentless drive to succeed, qualities that have shaped his path to where he is today. From producing content for millions of people and filming engaging videos, to hosting a radio show on Fix Radio and connecting with audiences across multiple social media platforms, Sam has built an impressive and far-reaching presence.
Sam recently partnered with IG Lintels on The Big Build project, where we supplied a range of lintels, and we were keen to learn more about the person behind the platform. In this interview, we explore who Sam is, how he got to where he is today, and the advice he’d offer to aspiring social media creators.
Tell us
about yourself…
My name is Sam Hughes. I grew up in Rustington, West Sussex. I was terrible at school and didn’t get many GCSEs, only one in business and one in drama, which probably explains a lot now! I did enjoy anything using my hands, though, like design tech, drama and business, which were my favourite subjects.
about your first ever job…
My first ever job was delivering the local paper around my area for £5 every evening after school. At the time, £5 to me was like winning the lottery. It taught me to appreciate money and to work hard, and you will gain from the work you put in.
about the construction industry…
After I left school, I attended college and wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do. All I knew was that electricians earned good money, so I decided to train to be a sparky! After two years onsite and in college, I decided it wasn’t for me and met Brad, who is now my business partner. At the time he was just launching an online builder’s merchant, so I decided to give up being an electrician and became a sales lead for the new website.
about social media…
Around 13 years ago when Brad was launching the online business merchant, we had no money to promote or market the business, so we decided to start filming onsite sketch videos around the construction industry for promotion purposes. Fast forward 13 years, and we now sit at around 3 million followers and have posted thousands of videos, posting on average two a day, every day.
about sharing content with millions of people…
Posting online is a weird feeling, but after doing it for so long, it now just becomes part of our life and daily routine. We never really think about how many people actually see the video, as that’s a scary thought! I love sharing our projects with the world and helping people along the way.
a top tip for social media…
My number one tip is consistency. If you are consistent, you will see a return. You get out what you put in. Another tip would be to just be yourself and be the same on camera as you are in real life, and that way you never get caught out.
what’s the best project you’ve ever worked on…
I’d say the best project to date is the current build – The BIG Build.
about your least favourite project…
My least favourite project was a few years back. We had a client who asked for a shingle driveway, but they weren’t happy with the results, so we had to remove all the shingle and start again! We removed 20 tonnes of shingle by hand!
everything you love about lintels…
I love lintels because they’re the unsung heroes of every build. No one notices them when they’re done right, but without them, nothing works. They quietly take all the load, keep everything structurally sound, and let us create clean openings without compromising strength.
about your future ambitions/next projects…
The next project after the BIG Build will be my personal house, which I’m very excited to get cracking on. I’ll be creating a side and rear extension.
