Bespoke engineering meets enhanced thermal performance.

At 92 Harrow Drive, traditional brickwork, projecting bay windows and detailed stone surrounds come together to create a distinctive residential development.

Behind the architectural detailing was a project that required more than a standard lintel package. With a 150mm cavity wall construction, the team at IG Lintels was able to offer the builder a choice between a standard solution and IG Hi-Therm Lintels, alongside bespoke solutions for the more complex openings.

The builder chose Hi-Therm, combining enhanced thermal performance with specially engineered lintels for the project’s splayed bays and stone surround details.

 

Designing around the detail

The first-floor bedrooms feature projecting bay windows, creating an attractive architectural feature but also introducing a more complex structural opening.

Rather than adapting a standard lintel to suit the design, IG developed special splayed bay lintels specifically for the geometry of these openings.

The development also incorporated stone surrounds around selected openings. These required additional bearing, so the relevant lintels were designed with extended end bearings to work with the surrounding construction.

This meant the lintel package could accommodate the architecture of the building, rather than forcing the design to work around a standard product.

 

Choosing Hi-Therm

At quotation stage, the builder was given two options: a standard lintel package or IG’s Hi-Therm solution.

The Hi-Therm option was selected for the project, providing an opportunity to improve the thermal performance of the openings as part of the initial specification.

Lintels sit within the building envelope, so their thermal performance can have an important role in helping to reduce heat loss and minimise thermal bridging around openings.

For the homeowner, that means the benefits of the specification go beyond what can be seen from the outside. A better-performing lintel can contribute to a more thermally efficient home, helping to support:

Bespoke lintels designed for the projecting first-floor bedroom bays, following the specific geometry of the openings.

Designed into selected lintels where the stone surround details required additional bearing.

Together, these solutions provided a coordinated approach to the project’s structural and architectural requirements.
